How to Make Fitness a Priority in Your Life

Article by Charles Volcolatte

Aside from a great looking physique, regular exercise also offers many health benefits. Many disorders can be treated with exercise, it helps prevent aging and declining health as well. Love for exercise does not come naturally, but it can be cultivated as a habit. This can be done by making it part of your regular routine. Start by making the kind of commitments that you know would be hard to break.

In this world there are people who give excuses and others who reap results. Which one are you?

Drugstore shelves are lined with hundreds of products offering all sorts of health benefits. While there is no such thing as a magic pill, there are a lot of products that are purported to be such. Not even the most advanced and complete nutritional supplement can alleviate stress, improve one’s outlook, extend life, and strengthen the body all at the same time. However, there is exercise. Most people do not enjoy exercise because not only is it difficult, it can be very boring as well. Purposefully changing one’s perception of exercise can help lessen one’s dread of it. Instead of thinking exercise, think fitness. Fitness means making your body move in order to stimulate its natural processes of cleansing.

One can never be totally fit and healthy without doing any form of exercise. The body’s vital systems will only function efficiently if blood is circulating properly and this is best achieved by movement, in particular, exercise. The movements done during exercise activate the body’s seven channels of elimination through which toxins are flushed out. In other words, to have a body that is in peak working condition, it is important to have a regular exercise regimen.

Here are some ways to make fitness an essential part of your life:

1. Decide. This word comes from the latin root “decidir” which means to cut off any other possibility from occurring. Make a firm decision that you will never compromise your long term health. Make a list of reasons behind this decision and go through it as often as you can.

2. Find a friend or family member who will help you stay committed. When someone important to you is involved, it is easier to stay on track and not give priority to anything else.

3. Get a fitness trainer and pay in advance. When you invest your money on something, the tendency is to make sure that it does not go to waste. At the same time an expert, in this case your trainer, will make you realize the value of the decision you have made. Paying for your fitness training will have a strong psychological effect that will cause you to follow through to the commitment you have made.

4. Join a group class. Exercising with other people will provide you with a support group that will help you stay motivated.

5. Block off your exercise time in your daily planner. Whatever physical activity it may be, write it down as a must do.

6. Write yourself a note everyday about how important it is for you to stay fit and healthy. It does not have to be lengthy. The purpose for this is to help you stay focused on your fitness goals.

7. Join a fitness event. You can sign up for a 3k run or a swim meet and train for it like an athlete. If you make your participation official, you are cutting off any other possibility from occurring. You will find yourself focusing on your training and once the event is over, you will feel a great sense of accomplishment. In addition, this positive experience will motivate you to keep pushing further.Just make that decision and you will be amazed at how far you can go. Exercise may start as just a simple habit but if you stay committed, you will have many fulfilling experiences that will add color to your fitness lifestyle and enrich you as a human being as well.

Try these simple techniques and soon enough fitness will become a priority in your life.

Reasons to Exercise

Article by Donovan Baldwin

Sure, we know we need to exercise for health, but what are the real reasons to exercise?

Well, the list can be very long, but here are a few items you may wish to consider.

Exercise will help with fat loss: Notice, I did NOT say, “weight loss”. You see, while weight can be a general indicator of health and fitness, it isn’t a perfect indicator. People have different body types, for example, and a physically fit, attractive, and perfectly healthy person can weigh more than what the charts say they should. It isn’t necessarily what you weigh that’s as important as what that weight is comprised of. After all, at his peak of health and fitness, Arnold Schwarzenegger was “overweight” but had a very low level of fat on his body.

While some fat in and on the body is necessary to health and proper functioning of various systems within the body, it is excess fat which becomes the villain and which must be gotten rid of. You exercise to do a lot of good things for your body, and to burn fat is one of them.

YOU have heard that exercise burns calories, but, when done properly, it will also burn fat. Burning calories is important because excess calories is where fat comes from, and when we burn the calories through physical activity, they do not have a chance to be stored as fat.

People who are overweight are more likely to be susceptible to a wide range of health difficulties.

Exercise can help prevent disease: It has been demonstated through many studies that participating in regular physical activity can help prevevent the occurence of many diseases and degenerative conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and depression.

These studies also show that a lack of exercise is often a contributing risk factor in many of these diseases and conditions. Sometimes, the effect of exercise is indirect but still of importance. As mentioned above, exercising to lose weight is a common goal, but often, a direct effect of losing weight is improved health in many areas.

Exercise helps improve overall health: Well, if regular exercise, combined with healthy eating and living practices, can help combat disease and degenerative conditions, isn’t that a pretty big deal? If, in addition to that, a regular program of physical activity can indirectly produce positive health effects as well, such as in the discussion on exercise and weight loss above, isn’t that even better? What more do you need to say about the subject?

Of course, those are some great points, but when you consider the overall positive effects of exercise on the immune system, the muscular system, the bones, the cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary systems, you can see that the value of regular moderate exercise can be even greater than originally anticipated. The person who exercises regularly CAN, in most cases, expect a more effective immune system to combat ill-health in many forms, stronger bones (an effect that can carry over into the senior years), a stronger, healthier heart and lungs, which, in turn, will make life easier and healthier.

Oh yes, don’t forget the stronger muscles which will be available to carry that healthy body around!

Exercise can improve your mental state: You may have heard of “runner’s high”, that euphoric feeling that those who exercise regularly become familiar with. It’s not just a state of mind! It is actually a result of the active body manufacturing, releasing, and/or activating “feel good” chemicals. Not only will the body and brain be exposed to natural, internal products such as endorphins and seratonin DURING the exercise period, but levels will commonly remain elevated in the regular exerciser.

Exercise to relieve depression has long been a standard in the arsenal of phychological health. Exercise and stress (which can be involved in a myriad of health problems) is a much studied area, and the verdict is in. Exercise can help improve not only depression and stress, but can even elevate the ability of the brain to function as it goes about its daily tasks, including regulating the processes of the body, and as it attempts to solve problems, learn new tasks, and make sense of the vast amount of data the moder person is exposed to.

While on the subject of how you feel, let’s touch briefly on “how you feel about yourself”.

When you take positive steps to improve yourself, you feel better…and better about yourself. As your body becomes leaner, trimmer, more effective, you feel better…and better about yourself. As you become stronger, healthier, and more full of the joy of living, you feel better…and better about yourself. Feelings such as these cannot help but be radiated out towards those around you, and be reflected back at you, making you feel better…and better about yourself!

Having said all that, it comes as no surprise that….

Exercise improves your ability to function socially: Not only will you feel better, look better, be healthier, and have a better self image and improved self confidence, but you will actually be better able to perform socially. Whether you want to learn to do ballroom dancing, ice skating, or simply stand face-to-face with someone who once would have overwhelmed you with THEIR presence, you will be better able to stand your ground. You will know that you are better prepared mentally and physically to meet the rigors of life, love (and sex), work, and play…and enjoy it!

Exercise does not have to be hard…at least at first. It is something that you get more out of the more you put in. However, at first, if you have not been exercising, any small change to get started is literally a step in the right direction. Oh, eventually you will probably need some good shoes, a set of barbells, a yoga mat, or a professional fitness trainer, but at the start, you will just need the knowledge of what regular exercise can do for you, and the willingness to get started and stay with it.

Maybe the reasons to exercise I have outlined above will help.

Lifestyle & Fitness ‘ Seven Tips To Beat Back Exercise Burnout

Article by Ruth Klein

If you’d like to help beat back stress and encourage healthy endorphins, begin exercising. You’ll get a stronger immune system, become less anxious and feel more fit.

Studies also show that exercise is also how we energize our brains. Biologist John Medina’s book, “Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School,” points out that being on the move helps us think more productively. But what happens when exercise burnout strikes? Several studies have found that what leads to exercise burnout includes boredom, too little time, or too many competing obligations that push exercise off the high-priority list.

Here are seven tips to beat back exercise burnout:

1. Vary your routine. Choose working out on the stretching machines one day and then pick weights the next. Skip one day of aerobic exercise for a weightlifting session. Varying your routine staves off boredom, while also exercising different muscle groups. Make a weekly list of varying exercise routines.

2. Vary exercise times. Exercising at the same time of day can lead to boredom. The same exercise routine can also backfire if competing obligations take over that time frame. You can be flexible about when you exercise and even how long you spend exercising. Break up your practice of a 30-minute morning workout into two smaller workouts, one in the morning and one toward the end of the day.

3. Take an exercise class. Take an exercise class to vary your exercise routine. Gyms and local community centers offer classes. Choose the one that fits your budget, because you don’t want money to become a reason to avoid exercise. Exercise videos also can be a lively way to change your routine

4. Exercise with a friend. Mingling with others and chatting while you exercise with other exercisers at the gym or when you go on walks keeps you interested. You can also share new ideas to vary your exercise activities or be creative when conflicting obligations force a change in your exercise schedule.

5. Don’t skip a good night’s sleep. A lack of adequate sleep can play a strong role in exercise burnout, because exhaustion creates stress, fatigue and a lack of focus. A lack of focus can also lead to exercise injuries. Ease into a good night’s sleep by avoiding exercise late at night.

6. Stretch. Stretching exercises before, during or after your exercise routine will keep you limber and less likely to experience minor exercise injuries. If you find yourself working late, take a standing or stretching break to do a few exercises in your office before you get back to work.

7. Take an exercise break. Take a vacation from exercise to avoid exercise burnout. Take a day or two off, and call it an exercise vacation. You’ll return to your routine stress-free, rested and re-focused, and if you return to your regular regime, your fitness won’t suffer.

What Makes A Good Gym?

Article by Jess Harley

Copyright (c) 2007 Jess Harley

I don’t know about you, but it took me years before I got up the nerve to join a gym. I had seen too many TV shows and read too many books about how the gym was a place to see and be seen. In my head I imagined all the women in the gym to have hard bodies and tanned skins. They never broke a sweat and their hair always looked perfect no matter what they were doing. I did not think I would ever have enough nerve to join a gym, but I finally did. I could not get the workout I wanted at home. It took me a while to find the perfect gym but this is what I looked for.

One thing you might want to keep in mind is if it is a coed gym or a female only gym. You might feel more comfortable in an environment with other women rather than in a gym that is mixed. If you are not sure what you would prefer, then make sure you check out both and compare the following If you have never step foot in a gym before, they you might not be able to tell a good gym from a bad gym. So where do you start in your quest for the perfect gym for you? First thing is to look at location. Is it near your home or your work? If it is, great that means it is convenient for you to get to. If it is not, do not even bother looking at it.

The next thing to check out is the price. Joining a gym can be expensive so really watch out for prices. There are some gyms that might have extra options such as a sauna, racquetballs quart, etc etc. The cost of these is what might that one gym so expensive. Are you going to use any of those amenities? If not find a different gym and make sure it has what you are looking for. For a decent basic gym, the average rate is between – a month.

If at all possible, see if you can get a free class or a trial workout before you sign up. There is no better way to see if you like the atmosphere other than actually working out there. Not only will get a feel of the environment you can also check out the quality of the facility. Is it clean? Are the locker rooms kept clean as well as the showers? Also check out the equipment, is there enough cardio equipment? Or do you notice people waiting around for cardio machines?

Another thing to look at is the staff. Do they greet you with a smile or a scowl? Do any walk around to offer help with any of the equipment or do they just stand at the desk in on the phone? A good staff is important because they are the basis for the gym’s environment. A gym with a moody staff is not going to be a happy place to work out.

The last thing to look at is your contract. If they are pressuring you to sign because the deal they are offering you is good for today only, do not do it. A good gym will allow you to read the contract before you make any decisions. Make sure if you ask about payment options. Some gyms will require a full year’s membership up front while others will offer you a monthly fee. Ask them what happens after you contract is up, does it automatically renew and lock you into another year or will you be able to cancel at anytime? Also find out what the cancellation policies are.

You want to make sure you find a gym you are comfortable with, because the more comfortable you are there, the more likely it is that you will stick with your workouts.

A Balanced Approach To Exercise With Acid Reflux

Article by Kathryn Whittaker

Experiencing acid reflux and esophageal spasms is no picnic. Anyone who has felt the scorch of heartburn does not look forward to its return. To help control acid reflux and reduce the risk of heartburn, there are many natural techniques sufferers can try such as watching their diet, and managing their weight. When it comes to managing weight, exercise plays an important role. Unfortunately, some exercises can actually cause acid reflux.

Exercise does not commonly cause heartburn, but for those who suffer from chronic acid reflux, heartburn may occur, especially when engaging in high-impact and jarring exercises such as jogging, or for athletes who take part in an intense fitness regimen. Furthermore, stomach exercises also seem to cause acid reflux in certain people.

It appears that symptoms of GERD that are induced by exercise occur due to the excessive contraction of stomach muscles. Some exercises cause stomach acid to travel back towards the esophagus, which tends to result in heartburn, shortly after exercises have been completed.

Even though there is a risk that you may experience heartburn either during or after you perform certain exercises, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t exercise. In fact, there are many ways you can prevent exercise-induced heartburn. The following are some suggestions.

Eat sensibly before exercising – Eat foods that are high in carbohydrates and low in fat and protein. Avoid foods such as caffeinated beverages, spicy and fatty foods, chocolate and citrus juice; foods that dramatically increase the risk of acid reflux.

Avoid exercising directly after eating – Wait 1-2 hours after you have eaten before engaging in exercise. Exercising on a full stomach puts pressure on the sphincter and increases the chance of acid reflux occurring. The sphincter is the circle of muscles between the stomach and the esophagus.

Drink water – Drink (do not gulp) plenty of water while you are working out to keep yourself well hydrated and to aid digestion. As a guide, drink 8 oz. of cool water 30 minutes prior to exercise, and sip 16 oz. of cool water every 15 minutes while exercising. Finally, drink about 24 oz of water when you are finished. Note: the amount of water you drink may change based on the intensity and length of your exercise.

Tone-down your exercise level – Instead of engaging in activities that require a lot of jiggling or bouncing such as jogging, or high impact aerobics (IE. jumping jacks, step-aerobics, sit-ups, etc.) – which increase the risk of acid reflux – take part in walking, cycling and swimming exercises.

Take medication – If you suffer from chronic heartburn and take medication for your condition, such as over-the-counter H2 blocker (Pepcid, Zantac, etc.) or prescription medication, talk to your doctor about taking meds before exercising if you frequently experience heartburn during exercises.

Don’t forget to talk with your doctor!

If you find that exercise is causing you heartburn, make sure you speak with your doctor before you begin taking medication. Ask your doctor to recommend exercises that will cause less discomfort. If you are unable to find new ways to exercise without causing heartburn, taking medication may be the best solution.

Finally, make sure you don’t ignore your body. If you experience pain in your chest when exercising, don’t ignore the pain and brush it aside thinking it to be only heartburn. Pain in your chest may actually be a symptom of a real heart problem. Always have chest pain checked out by your doctor.

Remember, the risk of exercise-induced heartburn isn’t an excuse not to exercise. Think about it this way. Better you exercise and take the chances of suffering heartburn which can be treated with medications, than not exercise and increase your risk of heart attack and a slew of other health problems.

Tips on Designing and Using Fitness Home Gyms to Lose Weight

Article by Nathalie Fiset

With membership fees for fitness centers continuing to rise and the pace of life just getting faster, the idea of building fitness home gyms start to become less of a luxury and more of a sensible solution. If you are interested with designing and using fitness home gyms to lose weight, here are several suggestions to consider.

Aside from knowing the main reason why you are setting up a home gym, say to lose weight, improve endurance or to build core, it is important to also take note of the following factors in designing a home gym that will definitely be used and help you achieve your fitness goals.

Tip #1 Consider space requirements. When building a fitness home gym, consider the type of equipment you’ll use and how much space it would take up. The place must also have proper ventilation; basically, it must allow you to sweat without making the room smell. It must have adequate lighting if you want to read while exercising, privacy if you are into yoga and maybe with a TV set if you want to play your favorite aerobics video. Here are some considerations you should take note of when planning your gym’s space with regards to the types of equipment you will use:

Bikes – allot about 10 sq. ft.

Free Weights – about 20 to 50 sq. ft.

Multi-Station Gym – approx. 50 to 200 sq. ft.

Rowing Machines – about 20 sq. ft.

Single-Station Gym – allot 35 sq. ft.

Ski Machines – about 25 sq. ft.

Stair Climbers – consider10 to 20 sq. ft.

Treadmills – 30 sq. ft.

Tip #2 Choosing the right equipment is one of the most important decisions to make when building fitness home gyms. Since maintaining overall physical health will be your ultimate goal once you’ve trimmed down and toned your body, you should have the proper equipment to help you improve your strength, flexibility, and endurance.

Examples of home gym equipment and accessories that can be used for strength training include:

- DumbBell Set

- Bench press

- Leg press

- Barbell Set for targeting different muscle groups

- Step Aerobic Step (doubles as a weight bench)

- Stability ball for core strength training and balance

- Weight bench

- Exercise mat

- Balance Trainer

- Ankle and wrist weights

- Multi-station weight machines

Examples of home gym equipment and accessories for stretching include:

- Floor mat

- Ab machines

- Multi-purpose bar

- Solo stretch

Examples of home gym equipment and accessories for endurance include:

- Treadmills

- Exercise bikes

- Elliptical trainers

- Rowing machines

- Stair steppers

- Aquatics cardio equipment

Not all types of gym equipment are expensive. You should browse several fitness supplies stores and check their selections. Consider buying secondhand gym equipment as well if you are working with a tight budget.

Tip #3 When designing home gyms, you need to focus on making the place into another motivational factor as well. It is not easy to motivate yourself and exercise alone. That’s why you need to make the place inspiring rather than discouraging. It must provide you with the necessary entertainment as well. If you don’t notice the passage of time whenever you watch TV then you must make sure your home gym has a TV set and so forth!

Tip #4 On using fitness home gyms, creating a routine is very important. Choose the best time of the day to exercise. Stick to your schedule until your mind and body is used to exercising during that time of the day.

Tip #5 Building fitness home gyms does not exempt you from healthy eating. This common mistake is what prevents many people from reaching their weight goals even if they exercise faithfully. Exercise and diet always go hand in hand and building fitness home gyms to lose weight is no exception to the rule!

In conclusion, realizing the motivating factor in building a home gym, the space requirements, selecting the right home gym equipment, making your home gym more helpful in motivating your to continue working out, sticking to a workout schedule and incorporating proper nutrition will help greatly in making a home gym design not just deliver value to your house, but also help you make your fitness goals come true.

Using a proper Fitness Daily to Become Fresh

Article by Chelsey Trisa

There is more to getting physically fit than simply exercising every once in a while. Everyone thinks “I want to get fit” and “I want to be healthier” every once in a while. If you truly want to get fit you need to make a commitment to a better level of overall health. You won’t ever get totally fit if you don’t make yourself eat healthy foods and follow a healthy lifestyle. Obviously those topics are best left for another time. If you need help putting together your fitness regime follow these hints.

Make healthy lifestyle choices. Don’t smoke. Cut down on the booze. You already know that smoking and drinking are filthy habits but if you keep doing them while you try to get healthy you will only keep yourself from reaching your goal. Smoking wreaks havoc on your lungs and impedes your ability to properly exercise each day. Drinking is terrible for your level and lowers your energy levels.

Beyond the harm, alcoholic beverages are notorious for being loaded with calories. You could spend your whole workout working off the calories you ingested with your booze. Why get in your own way? You do want to increase your workout intensity over time but not every day. Your muscles won’t ever get stronger if you up your workouts every day. This actually makes your muscles weaker in the long run. Exercise works by tearing down a muscle and then giving it time to heal and get stronger than it was before. You need to let your muscles heal a little bit before working them again. Move your workouts around. Do a hard workout one day and then an easy workout the next day. Doing this will allow you to keep up with your fitness regimen and keep your muscles safe.

Try Wii Fit! Believe it or not this video game is actually quite helpful in aiding your fitness routine. You can use this game to get in a full exercise routine right in your living room. It also teaches you some basic maneuvers so that, if you do decide to move to a public space to do your workout, you will have some knowledge under your belt.
